In order to increase its population, a Canadian city may have found the ideal solution: land for a handful of dollars.
This initiative originates from Pipestone, a rural municipality located in the heart of Canada, in the province of Manitoba. While the town had only 1,422 residents in 2021, it is offering a rather original programme to boost its population. Since 2012, Pipestone has developed an exceptional offer: land for only $10.
Some Conditions to Meet
To be the lucky beneficiary of this offer, the potential buyer must submit an offer to purchase the land of their choice, with a mandatory deposit of $1,000, according to the Demotivateur website. This offer will then be analysed and, if necessary, validated. After the purchase, the buyer will have 90 days to obtain a housing and building permit. They will have 12 months to begin construction. It is at this precise stage of the process that the Town of Pipestone will refund $990 of the deposit.
Beware of the Deadline
If the 90-day deadline is not used and no action is taken, the initial $1,000 will not be recoverable. According to municipal documents, the city can also refuse the buyer's offer. Regarding construction work, the owner may, once their home is built and under certain conditions, be eligible for a subsidy of 3% of the total cost.
Furthermore, the Canadian media is keen to highlight a specific point: the average monthly salary in the province of Manitoba is not equal to that of Quebec, at $1,161 compared to $1,248.
