German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned on Thursday those who challenge NATO, referring to Russia, and that every inch of the alliance's territory will be defended.
Merz was reviewing the initial troops from the German armoured brigade arriving in Lithuania to be permanently stationed there.
"Anyone who challenges NATO should know that we are ready. Anyone who threatens an ally should know that the entire alliance will defend every inch of its territory," he said at a ceremony outside Vilnius Cathedral, which was attended by forces from several allied countries.
The armoured brigade will be deployed gradually by 2027 and is intended to serve as a "credible deterrent", said the conservative chancellor, who emphasised that it's essential to be prepared to defend against aggression precisely in order to deter the enemy and avoid having to do so.
