NATO members must be ready for a potential Russian attack within the next four years, the head of Germany’s armed forces has warned.

General Carsten Breuer told the BBC that Russia is producing hundreds of tanks annually, many of which could be deployed in a future assault on NATO’s Baltic states by 2029.

Despite differing views from Hungary and Slovakia, the general emphasized that NATO remains united in its support for Ukraine.

He described Russia as a “very serious threat”, the most significant he has seen in his four decades of military service, noting that the country is producing approximately 1,500 tanks per year.

Not every single tank is going to [the war in] Ukraine, but it's also going into stockpiles and new military structures always facing the West. There's an intent, and there’s a build-up of the stocks,” he explained.

This is what analysts are assessing — 2029. So we have to be ready by 2029... But if you ask me whether that guarantees it won’t be earlier, I’d say no, it does not. That’s why we must be able to fight tonight,” he added.
