Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to defeat Donald Trump in the ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States.

Carney easily defeated his three Liberal Party rivals to replace Justin Trudeau, who is stepping down after serving as Canada’s leader for a decade.

During his victory speech, Carney took aim at the U.S. president, who recently imposed tariffs on Canada and even suggested the country should become the 51st U.S. state.

"Americans should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win," he said.

Carney will officially take office in the coming days, while Trudeau delivered his farewell speech, marking the end of his 10-year tenure as prime minister.

In response to U.S. tariffs, Canada has retaliated with its own counter-tariffs, and several provinces have banned American products, including alcoholic beverages.

While Canada’s economy heavily relies on trade with the U.S, raising concerns about a potential recession, Carney remains confident that the country will overcome any economic challenges.
