Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank, judges that the latest planned tariffs by US President Donald Trump will have a negative impact worldwide.

Donald Trump has announced a "liberation day," the day on which he will announce high import tariffs on numerous products entering the United States. According to the Washington Post, Trump will announce a 20% tariff on most goods imported into the United States instead of targeting specific countries or products.

The new high tariffs will be negative for the whole world, according to Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank, speaking to an Irish radio station: "The density and the durability of the impact will vary depending on the scope, on the products targeted, on how long it lasts, on whether or not there are negotiations."

Still, she is not pessimistic because she believes that an escalation of tariffs can also be harmful to those who inflict them: "They lead to negotiation tables where people actually sit down and discuss and eventually remove some of those barriers."
