North Korea has sent 15,000 migrant workers to Russia to help address severe labor shortages, as many Russian men have been conscripted to fight in Ukraine.
The Wall Street Journal reported the news on Monday, citing South Korean intelligence sources, as cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow continues to deepen.
The regime led by Kim Jong-un has already provided Russia with a contingent of 12,000 soldiers to support Russian forces in the battle to retake the Kursk region, parts of which remain under Ukrainian control following a surprise breakthrough last summer.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Labor, the country could face a labor shortfall of up to 2.4 million workers, with the current gap already at 1.5 million.
To compensate, Moscow has turned to labor from allied nations, with North Korean workers now expected to fill roles in major cities.
Last month, the Russian government officially thanked North Korea for its military assistance.
