On Friday, the White House unveiled a new website supporting the theory that COVID-19 originated from a lab leak in Wuhan, China, reigniting debate over the origins of a virus that caused millions of deaths and brought the world to a halt for years.
The launch follows a January report by the CIA suggesting that the virus most likely came from a laboratory. While the agency had previously stated it lacked definitive evidence to confirm the lab leak theory, the World Health Organization (WHO) has maintained that all origin scenarios remain on the table.
However, the Trump administration is doubling down on the lab leak theory, now claiming the virus “possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature,” and arguing that “if there was evidence of a natural origin, it would have already surfaced. But it hasn’t.”
U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary appeared to support the administration’s new stance during an interview on Fox News.
“I think people want some closure,” Makary said. “The entire nightmare of COVID for over three years was likely entirely avoidable, had we not been messing with Mother Nature in ways we never should have.”
