The joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises, dubbed Zapad-2025, have triggered high alert in Poland and raised concerns within NATO due to their proximity to the borders and possible provocations amid high regional tensions.

The maneuvers will take place from September 12th to 16th, involving 13,000 to 30,000 Russian and Belarusian troops, and will include simulations of air attacks, sabotage, and potential nuclear scenarios.

The exercises are concentrated near the Suwalki Corridor, a strategic stretch connecting Poland and the Baltic states, considered a "weak point" for NATO security.

Russian forces will test missiles, including the hypersonic "Oreshnik," and the training will include simulations of the use of nuclear weapons.

For its part, Poland closed all its border crossings with Belarus overnight from Thursday to Friday, citing "national security" reasons and also responding to recent Russian drone incursions into its airspace.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the deployment of 30,000 Polish and allied troops for simultaneous exercises, raising the alert level in the region.
