The Sun is currently approaching the solar maximum of its cycle, resulting in more frequent and intense solar storms. A real threat to SpaceX's Starlink.

In recent years, alongside the increase in the frequency and intensity of these storms, the number of satellites orbiting the Earth has skyrocketed, largely due to the rise of private mega-constellations such as Starlink. SpaceX alone has launched around 7,000 satellites into space.

New research suggests that increased solar activity shortens the lifespan of Starlink satellites from SpaceX and could bring them back to Earth more quickly. This study adds to a growing body of evidence showing that solar storms wreak havoc on Starlink satellites operated by Elon Musk.

The Sun is currently at the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, known as the solar maximum. This brings about a greater number of geomagnetic storms and other extreme space weather conditions.
