Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a series of laws on Monday to strengthen the crackdown on dissents, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine that began three years ago.

The new legislation criminalises "discrediting" the army or calling for sanctions against Russia, and prohibits "contributing to the implementation of decisions" by international organisations of which Moscow is not a member of.

This could apply, for example, to the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against Mr. Putin in April 2023. The legislation specifies that it can be used against individuals acting "on behalf of others" or for profit.

Another new law now specifically prohibits "foreign agents" deemed Kremlin detractors from serving on the boards of public companies.
