Recently appointed as Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney has announced a snap election in response to escalating trade tensions with the United States under Donald Trump. The election campaign will last five weeks before Canadians head to the polls.
While Carney’s Liberal Party had been trailing significantly in the polls, the political landscape shifted dramatically following Trump’s repeated remarks suggesting Canada should be annexed into the United States. These controversial statements have ignited public outrage across Canada, resulting in a surge of support for the Liberals.
"We're facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," Carney said following the dissolution of Parliament.
He added: "President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country. He wants to break us, so America can own us. We will not let that happen. We're over the shock of the betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons."
