Republican senators on Thursday blocked a resolution introduced by Democrats calling for greater transparency regarding prisoners deported to El Salvador.
The motion was ultimately rejected in a 50–45 vote. Democrats had introduced the resolution arguing that President Donald Trump invoked an outdated and ill-suited law to deport suspected gang members to the Central American country.
“This information is critical at a time when the Trump administration has admitted to wrongfully deporting people to El Salvador, and after Trump has said he's also looking for ways to deport American citizens to the same terrible prisons,” said Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, the resolution's lead sponsor.
Democrats pointed to the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador and later ordered returned by a Maryland judge—as a key example of why the resolution was necessary.
The vote represents a political victory for Trump, allowing him to continue pursuing his hardline immigration agenda.
