Russia has been carrying out a large-scale modernization of its nuclear infrastructure for years, according to classified documents uncovered in a new investigation.
The German news outlet Der Spiegel and Danish investigative group Danwatch obtained documents that outline architectural plans, infrastructure blueprints, procurement records, and are accompanied by satellite imagery of new facilities.
While the revelations do not provide a full picture of the work completed, they intensify growing concerns over Russia’s nuclear posture and rising global tensions.
Journalists at Danwatch received more than two million documents as part of the investigation. Some files reveal renovations of old Soviet-era bases and the construction of new buildings linked to Russia’s nuclear forces.
Among the findings are detailed plans of facilities used by Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, particularly in Yasny, a town in the Orenburg region.
