"Russia may challenge NATO's collective defence by 2030"

The European Defence Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius, believes that Russia might test the mutual aid commitment of Article 5 of the NATO treaty before 2030, he stated during a speech before the Lithuanian Parliament.

He also noted that the role of the United States in the defence of Europe will diminish over time.

Mr. Kubilius presented the "White Paper on European Defence/Preparedness by 2030", published this month by the European Commission.

Regarding Washington's commitment to the defence of Europe, Mr. Kubilius admitted "that it seems the general trend is for the United States to largely focus on China and on guaranteeing security on their continent".
