Russian army deserters have reportedly shot and killed a commander along with two subordinates from the military police, it has been reported.
The incident is said to have occurred in Ukraine’s Luhansk region, near the village of Nyzhnia Duvanka, though Moscow has not commented on the matter.
The number of deserters within the Russian military appears to be on the rise, as the human toll of the war—now in its third year—continues to mount.
This isn’t the first reported case of armed rebellion. In June 2023, a leaked video showed three Russian soldiers gunning down seven comrades who were attempting to flee.
In May 2024, Ukraine’s military intelligence service claimed that over 18,000 troops from Russia’s Southern Military District had secretly deserted the battlefield.
Ukraine, too, is facing issues with desertion. Numerous Ukrainian soldiers have abandoned their posts, even as Kyiv pushes to replenish its ranks amid intense fighting.
Meanwhile, Russian forces are reportedly on the verge of retaking the city of Sumy, nearly three years after being pushed out by Ukrainian troops.
