The Economist estimates that Russia will reach over a million soldiers killed in Ukraine by June.

Russia is expected to suffer its millionth casualty since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 before the end of this month, according to The Economist.

According to the weekly publication, Russia’s devastating losses — far exceeding those suffered by the country in any conflict since the Second World War — highlight Ukraine’s determined defence against a much stronger military power.

Despite this, Russia has so far shown itself fully capable of continuing to recruit men for so-called “suicide attacks”, a capacity that NATO cannot replicate in democratic countries.

Russia does not communicate any official figures, but Sergueï Markov, a former adviser to Russian president Vladimir Putin, accidentally revealed the number of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine during an interview with the Saudi television channel Al Arabiya.
