Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that the Taliban may now appoint an ambassador to Moscow—marking a significant step toward closer diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The announcement comes less than a week after Russia’s Supreme Court removed the Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations.

"The Russian side has decided to raise the level of Afghanistan’s diplomatic representation in Moscow to that of ambassador," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Following a meeting between Russian and Afghan diplomats in Kabul, two senior Taliban officials welcomed the news, expressing “deep gratitude for this move, which demonstrates the Kremlin’s sincere commitment” to the Central Asian country.

The Taliban retook Kabul in August 2021 after the collapse of the U.S.-backed Afghan government, just days after American troops withdrew from the country.

Despite this new diplomatic development, no country has formally recognized the Taliban-led government.
