Santorini is usually bustling with tourists in the summer, but for the first time since the Covid 19 pandemic, it is witnessing a significant drop in visitor numbers.

Many international visitors have been put off by recent earthquakes: the streets of the picturesque Greek island are much quieter. Visitor numbers are expected to decrease by 20 to 30% compared to previous years. Airlines have reduced the number of available seats and hoteliers are forecasting losses of 10 to 15%.

The drop is so severe that it could have consequences for the whole Greek economy, as Santorini accounts for about 10% of Greek tourism. In an attempt to attract last-minute visitors, hotels are offering discounts.

The number of cruise ships remains stable, but overall, tourists are spending less on accommodation, food, and shopping, partly due to the global cost of living crisis.
