This military base was installed by the Nazis during the Second World War. The place, which had already been mentioned in archival documents, had never been found. Some historians even considered it a myth. Yet…

The military base, dubbed "Schatzgraber" (“Treasure Seeker” in English), was discovered in 2016 by a team of Russian scientists exploring Alexandra Land, far in the Arctic Circle (and on Russian territory), reports the media Atlantico. On-site, the explorers came across bunkers and more than 500 objects, paper documents, petrol cans, weapons, all preserved by the cold.

Out of food

It was under the orders of the dictator Adolf Hitler, after the German invasion of Russian territory, that the base was said to have been constructed in 1942. It was later abandoned in July 1944. The soldiers deployed there, short of food resources, were said to have eaten raw polar bear meat, infected with worms. As Atlantico points out, all of them were said to have become seriously ill and had to be evacuated. Half of them were said to have lost their lives following the incident.
