Tariffs or no tariffs? On Wednesday evening, the American president announced that he would suspend his "reciprocal" tariffs for all affected countries for 90 days.

For all countries except China. As Beijing resists and retaliates each day against every new increase in its tariffs, Donald Trump has decided to punish it further. "Given China's lack of respect for global markets, I hereby raise the tariffs applied by the United States to China to 125%, with immediate effect," he stated on his platform Truth Social. He added: "At some point, and I hope in the near future, China will realise that the era of scamming the United States and other countries is no longer tenable or acceptable."

Negotiate, Don't Retaliate

Upon the announcement of the suspension, financial markets soared. The White House occupant took this decision because many affected countries chose negotiation over retaliation.

Beyond this 90-day pause, Donald Trump also announced "a substantial reduction in the reciprocal rate during this period, by 10%, also with immediate effect".
