In Bruges, cobblestones have been disappearing from the historic city centre in a remarkable way. So far, about 700 cobblestones have been taken—often as souvenirs by tourists.

Municipal workers have to install new stones almost daily. Every month, between 50 and 70 pieces disappear. Although it may seem innocent, it costs the city a lot of money: around €200 per square metre. On top of that, it poses safety risks, since someone could easily trip in the historic streets of the 'Venice of the North' if there’s a missing cobblestone.

The cobblestones are part of UNESCO’s World Heritage, and their disappearance affects the city’s historic character. The city therefore urges visitors to show respect for the cultural heritage.

If the problem persists, Bruges may consider taking legal action, but so far no one has been caught in the act. Other popular cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, and Barcelona are struggling with similar issues.
