Taiwan expects China to attempt an invasion of the island in 2027, prompting Taipei to ramp up military exercises to gauge Beijing's response.
The United States believes that Chinese President Xi Jinping may order a large-scale invasion of the self-governing island, which lies around 160 kilometers from mainland China, within two years.
By specifying a potential invasion date, Taiwan acknowledges the threat from its neighbor as a serious possibility. Washington has urged Taipei to strengthen its defense capabilities in response.
China has consistently maintained its goal of reunifying Taiwan, claiming it as a province that must be brought under Chinese control.
However, Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo downplayed the significance of the 2027 timeline. He explained that setting a target date is a standard military practice to assess the coordination and integration of new weapons systems.
Despite this, Koo emphasized that intelligence from allied nations suggests China could transition from training exercises to combat operations faster than previously assumed.
The defense minister stated that Taiwan must prepare for the worst-case scenario and implement countermeasures immediately, according to a report from the Liberty Times.
