It's a trend that's exploding on TikTok right now, and it's hard to miss. The goal of "burn lines"? Expose yourself to the sun when the UV index is highest, without any sunscreen, and... wait until your skin burns to the point that very defined tan lines become visible.
Social media isn't all good. Between challenges, trends, and live streams, it's hard to know where to turn to. And while some trends are beneficial, leading users to accept themselves more, to be inspired, or even to speak out, "burn lines" are reckless.
No, it's not art!
Stefaan Lauwaert, Managing Director of the Burn Foundation (in Belgium), faced with the proliferation of videos, wanted to make his voice heard and emphasise that "burns are not an art form, but serious injuries with lifelong consequences. We must take this behavior seriously and provide support to young people before it escalates."
The trend is pushing those who engage in it to swap sunscreen for monoi and coconut oil: enough to burn the skin, accelerate its aging, and, even more seriously, increase the risk of cancer.
