The chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces has issued a stark warning, saying the military is fully prepared for any confrontation and will ensure that Iran has the final say if attacked first. The statement was reported by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.

The comments from Major-General Mohammad Baqeri come shortly after a fourth round of indirect nuclear talks between the United States and Iran in Oman over the weekend. Although both sides expressed optimism about reaching a potential agreement, no concrete progress has been made.

In case the enemies make a mistake or intend to take action against the establishment and the sacred waters and soil of the Islamic Republic of Iran, our armed forces have the ability and readiness to confront them,” Baqeri said, according to IRNA.

While Iran maintains it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, Washington is pushing for full denuclearization. The U.S. demands include a halt to uranium enrichment and the dismantling of centrifuges and access to raw nuclear materials.

Baqeri issued a final warning to those he described as hostile powers: “Our advice to the enemies who sometimes pose threats against the establishment is: You may initiate a conflict with the Islamic Republic based on a miscalculation, but the ending, manner, timing, location and developments on the battleground will not be within your control.”
