The European Commission has unveiled proposals allowing for the deportation of individuals who do not have the legal right to stay in the European Union.

These plans, published on Tuesday, stem from requests by European leaders for "innovative solutions" to manage undocumented migrants.

The Commission stated that the proposal introduces "more modern and effective measures" aimed at increasing the number of deportations for individuals whose asylum applications have been rejected or who have overstayed their legal residence period.

This new regulation, which remains a draft for now, must be approved by EU ministers and European lawmakers before an official European Return Order can be established.

The legislation also requires EU member states to sign agreements with non-EU countries to set up centers to accommodate individuals whose requests to stay have been denied.

The proposal has been welcomed by far-right parties, while other lawmakers argue that many critical questions remain unanswered.
