The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, has called for internationally coordinated sanctions.

Kaja Kallas wants to exert "more pressure" on Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine. "If sanctions are coordinated internationally, they carry much more weight than if we act alone," the EU foreign policy chief said during her address to the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg.

Kaja Kallas made this statement four days after the phone call between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US Vice President J.D. Vance to discuss the need for coordinated action to maintain pressure on Russia while the EU works on the 19th sanctions package.

Ms. Kallas also discussed the importance of aligning sanctions with those already imposed by other powers, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, particularly targeting cryptocurrency networks used to circumvent sanctions against Russia.

On the other hand, the High Representative also welcomed the progress made by Ukraine in the accession process, as "it has demonstrated that, even in a country devastated by war, it is possible to move forward to meet the requirements of the European Union."
