The German military, known as the Bundeswehr, is considering deploying troops to eastern Lithuania, near the Belarusian border, in a move aimed at deterring potential Russian aggression.

The troops stationed near Belarus are expected to be fully operational by 2027, following Germany’s recent approval of an increased defense budget.

"We have a clear mission. We have to ensure the protection, freedom, and security of our Lithuanian allies here on NATO's eastern flank," said Brigadier General Christoph Huber, commander of the German brigade in Lithuania.

Lithuania also shares a border with Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, where part of the Russian fleet is stationed.

Amid growing fears in the Baltic states that Vladimir Putin may seek to expand his military ambitions, Berlin and Vilnius have taken proactive steps by strengthening their defense cooperation.

According to German newspaper Bild, both German intelligence and the military believe that the Russian president is preparing for a confrontation with NATO.
