The head of the Russian-led military alliance, Imangali Tasmagambetov, has warned that the risk of a global conflict is highly likely due to growing instability and the spread of nuclear weapons.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear warheads to strike Ukraine and force the neighboring country into submission.
Despite President Donald Trump’s pledge to end the conflict swiftly, fighting between Kyiv and Moscow continues amid sporadic and unpredictable peace negotiations.
Tasmagambetov, Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), issued his stark warning during a speech at the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of Russia in Moscow.
“The current transitional period carries the risk of a new global war being unleashed. We know that nuclear weapons and the near-universal tendency towards military escalation make a third world war a real possibility,” he said.
“This makes the analysis of modern conflict potentials not only timely but essential—not just for academic purposes, but for guiding international political decisions,” he added.
