Russian authorities on Saturday recognised for the first time the participation of North Korean troops in the counter-offensive against Ukrainian forces that penetrated into the Russian region of Kursk.

"A new page in the glorious annals of military fraternity between the Russian and Korean peoples has been turned," said the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, during a press conference.

Ms Zakharova highlighted the work of "the fighters of the DPRK, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea".

"They stood alongside Russian soldiers in the Kursk region, demonstrating their strength and heroism. We will never forget our friends."
