The new German government wants to push the European Union to impose sanctions on a member state for failing to uphold the bloc’s fundamental values.

While the country in question was not explicitly named in a draft proposal by Germany’s new ruling coalition, Politico reports that Berlin is targeting Hungary—one of Vladimir Putin’s closest allies in Europe.

The coalition, which includes the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU), and likely the Social Democratic Party (SPD), is urging the EU to take stricter action against countries that violate its rules.

Negotiators from the parties reportedly wrote:"Existing protective instruments, from infringement proceedings and the withholding of EU funds to the suspension of membership rights such as voting rights in the Council of the EU, must be applied much more consistently than before."

Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán—a staunch supporter of the Russian president—has been accused of undermining judicial independence, restricting press freedom, and eroding democratic norms.

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, Budapest has consistently called for the easing of EU sanctions imposed on Russia for over three years.
