The Polish military intervened after a vessel belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” was spotted performing suspicious maneuvers near an undersea power cable connecting Poland and Sweden.
The incident comes amid heightened NATO vigilance in the Baltic Sea, especially after a Chinese ship severed several undersea cables last year, raising concerns about the vulnerability of key infrastructure.
“A Russian ship from the ‘shadow fleet’ covered by sanctions performed suspicious maneuvers near the power cable connecting Poland with Sweden,” wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X. “After the effective intervention of our military, the ship sailed back to a Russian port,” he added.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz indicated that an air patrol forced the vessel to withdraw while a Polish Navy ship was en route to the scene.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw declined to comment while Moscow has consistently denied any involvement in sabotage operations in the past.
