Pope Francis passed away on Monday, 21 April, due to bilateral pneumonia which was diagnosed on 14 February and had forced him to spend several days at Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
On Sunday, 20 April, he made his last public appearance from the balcony of the Vatican to give the Urbi et Orbi blessing during the Easter mass. The death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.
"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sadness that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. Today, at 7:35am, the Bishop of Rome, Bishop Francis, returned to his Father's house. His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his Church," he declared.
