The Premier of Ontario has announced the suspension of a planned 25% tariff on electricity sold to some U.S. states.

The decision came after a phone call between Doug Ford and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, during which both officials agreed to issue a joint statement on social media. They are now set to meet this Thursday in Washington.

Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the U.S. president has repeatedly threatened Canada and Mexico with new tariffs. Now that Trump has followed through, Canada has retaliated, with some provinces even banning the sale of American alcoholic beverages.

Ontario supplies electricity to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, generating $700 million in annual revenue for the province.
