The Trump administration is reportedly considering offering Greenland a special political status to bring the Arctic territory closer to the United States.

According to officials, the plan would grant Greenland a Compact of Free Association (COFA) status—an arrangement under which the U.S. would provide essential services such as postal operations, emergency infrastructure, and military protection.

In exchange, the U.S. military would operate freely on the island, and trade with the United States would be exempt from customs duties.

Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has renewed efforts to acquire Greenland, a territory under Danish sovereignty. However, both Copenhagen and the Greenlandic capital Nuuk have reiterated that the island is not for sale.

While such a status would fall short of Trump’s goal of directly annexing Greenland, it would still represent a major step toward expanding U.S. influence in the Arctic.

Greenland is highly coveted due to its vast reserves of natural resources, including graphite, lithium, and copper.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. intelligence agencies had been instructed to ramp up information gathering efforts on the island.
