The United States has deployed a nuclear-powered submarine near the Chinese coast as Beijing continues to expand its naval fleet.
The deployment of the USS Ohio underscores Washington’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the Pacific Ocean.
According to recent satellite imagery, the submarine has arrived in Guam, located east of the Philippines, where several U.S. military bases are stationed.
The Ohio is one of four Ohio-class guided-missile submarines in the U.S. Navy, alongside the USS Michigan, USS Florida, and USS Georgia. These submarines were converted from ballistic missile submarines into conventional platforms armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Each vessel can carry up to 154 missiles, each with a range of approximately 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles).
Meanwhile, China’s navy is now the largest in the world, boasting over 370 warships, including 12 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and 48 submarines.
