The United States has recently trained South Korean forces to be ready to respond in the event of a nuclear strike from North Korea, amid growing concerns over Pyongyang’s aggressive posture.

North Korea remains one of the few nations in the world believed to possess nuclear warheads—estimated at around 50—and its leader, Kim Jong-un, has repeatedly threatened to use them against perceived enemies of the state.

With the nuclear threat looming close, Seoul received specialized training from Washington as part of their ongoing military cooperation. U.S. troops are also stationed in South Korea to deter any potential North Korean aggression.

The training sessions took place from April 15 to 16 and were led by the U.S. Nuclear and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Agency.

The training content is also directly applicable to Alliance tabletop exercises and wargames focused on conventional-nuclear integration, and enhancing the combined joint force’s strategic understanding,” U.S. Forces Korea said in a statement.
