The United States should not intervene to help Europe in the event of a Russian attack, according to a leaked Pentagon memo.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reportedly stated that Europe cannot count on American military assistance if Russia were to launch an invasion.
The classified document also outlines the U.S. military’s priority: countering China, ensuring that American defense capabilities remain focused on deterring Beijing rather than being stretched to protect European allies.
British MP Mike Martin, a member of the UK Defence Committee, responded to the leak by urging Europe to take full responsibility for its own security rather than relying on U.S. decisions.
"This leaked report tells us in black and white what we’ve known for six weeks: the U.S. is not interested in the defense of the European continent. The UK now needs to work rapidly with our European allies to deliver collective security in Europe without the US," Martin said.
The document underscores Washington’s strategic focus on China, making clear that defending Taiwan and protecting U.S. homeland security take precedence over European security concerns.
"China is the Department’s sole pacing threat, and denial of a Chinese fait accompli seizure of Taiwan—while simultaneously defending the U.S. homeland—is the Department’s sole pacing scenario," Hegseth wrote in the memo.
