Italian authorities have confirmed the construction of the world's largest suspension bridge, which will connect the Italian mainland to Sicily, as part of a colossal €13.5 billion infrastructure project.

The project has long been delayed by debates over its scope, seismic risks, environmental impact, and the threat of mafia interference.

The Messina Strait Bridge will be "the largest infrastructure project in the West," Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said at a press conference in Rome, after the interministerial committee overseeing strategic public investments approved the project.

The project will create 120,000 jobs annually and accelerate growth in southern Italy thanks to billions of euros invested in roads and other infrastructure projects related to the bridge.

Preliminary work could begin between late September and early October, with construction expected to begin next year. Despite bureaucratic delays, the bridge is expected to be completed between 2032 and 2033, Salvini said.
