In Castellammare di Stabia, just below Naples, four people died on Thursday afternoon when the cable car cabin they were in crashed to the ground.
The cable car leads to Monte Faito, a mountain standing over 1,100 metres high, offering views over the Bay of Naples.
The tow cable is said to have detached, causing two cabins with a total of sixteen people aboard to come to a standstill. However, the cabin closest to the mountain station detached after a while and crashed with five occupants - the cable car operator and four tourists. Four of them did not survive the fall, while one person was taken away with serious injuries. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. It is possible that the strong wind played a role.
