Toddler chokes on banana in daycare

A 20-month-old child died on 21 March after choking on a banana at the 'Les P’tits Pirates' daycare in the municipality of Le Plessis-Robinson, near Paris.

The toddler choked on a banana in the nursery and was deprived of oxygen for a long time.

Staff performed the Heimlich manoeuvre, but without success. They also attempted to resuscitate him, but that also failed. The boy was taken to hospital and kept in an artificial coma. The parents were informed that his brain was deprived of oxygen and that he would not survive or would awaken brain dead. On Friday evening, 28 March, a week after the incident at the daycare, the child passed away.
