Rescuers have managed to recover the lifeless body of a 74-year-old trucker. The man disappeared with his truck into a huge sinkhole in the Japanese city of Yashio more than three months ago.
On 28 January, the man unsuspectingly drove his truck across an intersection in the city of Yashio, when he was suddenly swallowed up by a gigantic sinkhole that opened up right in front of him. The sinkhole had a diameter of no less than 40 metres and a depth of 15 metres. It was an extremely challenging task to reach the truck cab due to the continuous flow in the sewer system.
On Friday, after a months-long struggle, the Japanese fire department finally managed to access the truck cab and recover the body of the occupant. During that operation, the residents of Yashio were asked not to shower or use large amounts of water, to prevent the supply of new sewage water from hindering the work.
