Raymond Burke, the cardinal from Wisconsin, is very conservative and has had several disagreements with late Pope Francis.
The cardinal Raymond Burke, aged 76, is a very conservative clergyman who has had disagreements with Pope Francis on most of the major issues facing the Catholic Church. Cardinal Burke, a Wisconsin native, has maintained a firm stance against relaxing the Church's policy regarding LGBTQ individuals, divorce, or the role of women in the Church.
Burke is also a Trump supporter. In 2016, when Pope Francis criticised the president's plans to build a wall on the southern border with Mexico, Burke offered his support to the Republican, stating that he was "defending the values of the Church".
Bishop Burke is one of several candidates to succeed Pope Francis, but he's especially the favourite of the American president.
After his death, the 138 cardinals under the age of 80 will meet in conclave to choose his successor. They will remain in seclusion for two to three weeks until the election of the new pope, with voting continuing until a candidate receives two-thirds of the votes. At that moment, white smoke will rise from the chapel chimney.
