Trump wants to relinquish leadership of NATO forces in Europe

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering relinquishing the command of NATO in Europe. For nearly 75 years, the United States has appointed their four-star general to the position of commander.

The Pentagon is undergoing a major restructuring of combat commands and US military headquarters. According to two officials from the Department of Defense, one of the projects under consideration is for the United States to give up its role as supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe

No timeline has been set yet. General Christopher Cavoli is due to complete his three-year term this summer.

The decision concerns partners, a sign of the gradual disengagement of the Trump administration from NATO.
