Donald Trump has issued a new ten-day ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.
If no agreement is reached by August 8, 2025, the United States will impose new sanctions and higher tariffs on Russia and its trading partners. This deadline represents a drastic reduction from the previous 50-day ultimatum, which Trump claimed was motivated by the lack of progress in negotiations and continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, particularly Kyiv. Trump stated that "there is no reason to wait" and was publicly disappointed by Putin's behavior.
The Kremlin indicated that Russia "has taken note of the ultimatum" but officially maintained its position of continuing the "special military operation" in Ukraine. For its part, Ukraine saw this decision as a clear sign of international pressure, although direct negotiations have not yet made significant progress.
If the ceasefire is not implemented within the announced timeframe, the United States will impose 100% tariffs and may strengthen other economic sanctions against Russia.
