U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly told European leaders that Vladimir Putin has no intention of ending the war in Ukraine because he is currently winning.
The admission came earlier this week during a call with European heads of state, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited three sources close to the president.
It marks the first time this acknowledgment has been made public, highlighting the growing challenge in bringing Kyiv and Moscow to the negotiating table.
Despite a phone call between Trump and Putin earlier in the week, no progress was made, and talks remain stalled.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused the Russian leader of simply trying to “buy time” and avoid ending a war that has now dragged on for more than three years.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has ramped up drone attacks on Russian territory, with repeated strikes this week disrupting flights at multiple airports around Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that no agreement had been reached on resuming peace talks.
