U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff has declared that Iran must now completely dismantle its nuclear program, despite what had initially appeared to be promising talks between the two nations last weekend in Oman.
This abrupt policy reversal comes just hours after Witkoff had previously stated that Iran would be permitted to enrich uranium strictly for civilian purposes.
The shift is expected to complicate ongoing negotiations, especially as Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to “bomb” Iran if no deal is reached.
Witkoff posted on social media: “A deal with Iran will only be completed if it is a Trump deal. Any final arrangement must set in place a framework for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Middle East – meaning that Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponization program. It is imperative for the world that we create a tough, fair deal that will endure, and that is what President Trump has asked me to do.”
Just a day earlier, Witkoff had told Fox News that negotiations had centered on Iran’s civilian nuclear capabilities.
