Ukrainian forces have recently captured two Chinese nationals fighting alongside the Russian army in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
Ukrainian leadership, briefed by intelligence officials, believes there are likely more than just two Chinese individuals involved.
Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, stated that the discovery raises serious doubts about China’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace after more than three years of conflict.
Neither Moscow nor Beijing has commented on the revelations, while China has never officially announced the deployment of troops to Ukraine. So far, only North Korea has publicly sent a contingent of soldiers to support Russia’s operations in the Kursk region.
"We have information suggesting that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupier's units than just these two," the Ukrainian president said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy added: "Russia's involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war."
