The Trump administration has called on European countries to supply eggs to the U.S., as Americans continue to face rising costs for this basic staple.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued the request while Trump signed new tariffs on European aluminum and steel and threatened to impose 200% tariffs on alcoholic beverages.

Despite Trump's campaign promise to lower egg prices on his first day in office, the cost of a carton of eggs has skyrocketed over the past few months.

The surge in prices is partly due to avian flu outbreaks, which have affected many U.S. egg producers.

According to Reuters, the USDA has sent a letter to European suppliers to assess availability and the possibility of exporting eggs to the United States.

In another letter sent this month to the Danish Egg Association, the USDA wrote: "We’re still waiting to get more guidance from Washington on next steps, but do you have an estimate of the number of eggs that could be supplied to the United States (assuming they meet all the import requirements)."
