Vladimir Putin will face "severe consequences" if he violates the ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned.
Starmer issued this warning to the Russian president during a meeting with officials from 31 different countries at the Northwood military base in north London.
The British leader emphasized that Moscow would not be able to use its veto power to prevent Ukraine from choosing how to defend itself, even though Putin has demanded the country's demilitarization as part of a peace agreement.
"The point of the security arrangements is to make it clear to Russia there will be severe consequences if they are to breach any deal," Starmer told reporters.
"This is why it will require a US component; because it needs to be clear to Putin that there will be severe consequences if he breaches the lines. So the purpose of this plan is to ensure that we maintain the peace – as it is in Estonia and all the other countries in which we’re deployed," he added.
Starmer also clarified that the UK is not considering deploying British troops to Ukraine, as the Ukrainian military is already "one of the strongest" in Europe.
