According to reports in the American media, Donald Trump plans to order the dismantling of the Department of Education on Thursday.
American media such as The New York Times and The Washington Post report that the American President Donald Trump will sign a decree on Thursday to dismantle the Department of Education. The newspapers learned this from sources within the White House.
With the dismantling, Trump would fulfil a campaign promise. Trump has shown himself to be a strong opponent of, among other things, diversity programmes and the protection of transgender students within the American education system.
Trump still needs the approval of Congress, but the Trump administration has already taken steps to drastically reduce the Department's staff and severely limit its authority.
According to the decree, the authority for education would no longer rest with the federal government but would be transferred to the states.
